On July 10, 1930, Bernhard Caesar Einstein was born in Dortmund, Germany. Frieda Einstein was his mother, while Hans Albert Einstein was his father. Engineer Bernhard was Swiss-American and the only biological grandchild of Albert Einstein to reach adulthood.
Up until he was eight years old, Bernhard lived his early years in Switzerland. By then, Albert, his grandpa, had counseled his father to immigrate to the US in order to escape the persecution of Jews by the Nazis.
In 1933, Hans Albert moved to South Carolina with his spouse and Bernhard, on his father’s advice. After landing a job as a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, he went on to become a professor at the California Institute of Technology. Bernhard spent his adolescent years growing up in Pasadena as a result.
When Bernhard first saw his grandfather, he was two years old. He stayed in New Jersey and Saranac Lake with the renowned scientist. Albert must have had a sincere relationship with his grandson since, upon his death in 1955, he bequeathed his violin and a respectable sum of money to him.
Education and Career
In high school and even during his first two years of college at the University of California, Berkeley, Einstein did not take his studies seriously. At UC, his only area of proficiency was German. He joined the US Army in 1954 and completed his basic training at Fort Ord, which is located close to Monterey, California.
While stationed in southern Germany, he got to know Doris Aude Ascher, the woman he would eventually marry in 1954. After being discharged from the army, Einstein applied to and was accepted into the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich, Switzerland. He attributed his development of self-discipline to his time in the army. He went to the ETH to study physics, carrying on the family tradition started by his father and grandparents.
After graduating from ETH, Einstein went back to the US and started working as an engineer in Dallas, Texas, for Texas Instruments.
After that, Einstein relocated to California and began working in the San Francisco Bay Area at Litton Industries. After that, Bernhard moved back to California and started working in the San Francisco Bay Area for Litton Industries. His area of expertise was light amplification for night vision devices. He applied for and received four patents related to light amplification research while he was employed there.
Later, Bernhard returned to his native Switzerland and took a job at the Swiss Army Research Lab. He received another U.S. patent while he was there. At the age of 78, Bernhard passed away in Switzerland on September 30, 2008.
